Massage Therapist level #1 programme

 

 


The Massage Therapist level #1 programme is made up of various courses and is recognized by the F.Q.M.  It is given two evenings per week over a period of about 40 weeks and including 14 week-ends for the mandatory complementary courses.  This programme is bilingual and is open to women and men.

In order to be recognized as a Massage Therapist level #1, 15 hours of Introduction to Swedish massage must be completed and then the 400-hour programme needs to be followed. This includes:

 
  1. 150 hours of Swedish Massage
  2. 45 hours of Anatomy
  3. 45 hours of Physiology
  4. 40 hours of Supervised Swedish Practice
  5. 45 hours of Sexuality and Sexual Ethics
  6. 45 hours of Interview Techniques and Communication Skills
  7. 30 hours of Professional Framework 

Note: Secondary V is a pre-requisite to be a member of the F.Q.M.

This programme is usually completed in about 10 months, from September to June and from January to December, with 6 weeks off in summer.  It is not possible to go through the programme quicker than that, but it is possible to stretch it over a longer period of time to suit your schedule.  If you feel that 10 months is too long, please consider the following:

- For the Swedish massage course, you will have to do quite a few practice hours on people, over and above classroom time. Count at least 4 hours per week.

- For every course there are assignments, reports, projects and exams.

- For anatomy & physiology, there is a lot of new terminology to memorize.  All this requires study time.

- For 400 hours at school over 10 months, count on as many hours of practice and study at home.

- Remember that to have good marks, you must have time to put into this course.

- Finally, consider that you are embarking on a new career and you want to enjoy the progression through the programme!

Introduction to Swedish Massage

 

 


This 15-hour course teaches you a few general Swedish massage techniques on the different parts of the body. The course is given concurrently in French and in English.  It is a fun, practical course open to everyone who is interested in massage. Estheticians also enjoy this course to learn techniques to include in body wraps.

This course is a prerequisite for future massage therapist level #1.

Swedish massage

 

 


A dynamic and invigorating approach which encourages the elimination of toxins and affects the circulatory system as well as the muscular apparatus. The session takes place on a comfortable table, the client is disrobed but covered with a sheet and oils are used. This being the most well-known and popular type of massage, it is the foundation of bodywork.  The 150-hour course is given concurrently in French and in English.

The cost of the private mid-term and final exams, 1 hour 30 minutes long is included.

Anatomy and Physiology

 

 


These 45-hour courses offer a highly comprehensive view of the musculoskeletal system, as well as an overview of all the other principal systems of the body, including the circulatory, respiratory, nervous, immune, digestive and urinary systems. Each course can be taken separately. These two courses are given concurrently in French and in English.

Anatomy: on Mondays from September to December and on Wednesdays from January to April.

Physiology: on Mondays from January to April and on Wednesdays from September to December.

Professional Framework

 

 


This 30-hour course defines the limitations of massage and teaches what alternative and conventional medicine are used for. It helps distinguish between the different therapies to be able to refer to colleagues. This course keeps the practitioner up to date as regards the laws pertaining to the practice of massage therapy, through the study of the F.Q.M.'s professional code of ethics. It is given concurrently in French and in English.

The aim of this 45-hour course is to heighten the awareness of practitioners regarding sexuality and ethics. It teaches intervention skills so as to be able to adequately face various situations involving sexual connotations. It also explains how to recognize the responsibilities and limitations within the scope of a professional practice. This course is given concurrently in French and in English.

This 45-hour course develops basic communication skills through the understanding of the human psyche and of self. A certain degree of introspection and willingness to understand oneself is necessary to do well in this course. It also demonstrates the art of good listening skills, as well as how to manage and communicate information. You will also learn how to complete a proper interview with a new client. This course is given concurrently in French and in English.

Supervised Swedish Massage Practice

 

 


As well as classroom triads, massage sessions are given to the public on the school premises, under the supervision of a teacher. There is time allowed between each client to discuss any difficulties that may have been encountered and how these were dealt with. It gives the students an opportunity to work with the public. You therefore deal with a great variety of body types and health conditions. This course is given concurrently in French and in English and is available for men and women.
